Pediatric Dentists in Sugar Land, Texas Join in the Event with Activities Centered Around the Theme: ‘Sugar Wars’

Sugar Land, Texas-- The American Dental Association has deemed the month of February as National Children’s Dental Health Month, a time for pediatric dentists in Sugar Land, Texas, alongside other community officials to raise awareness of the importance of children’s dental health. Each year a new theme is selected for events to be centered around, and this year they have selected ‘Sugar Wars,’ to emphasize that a healthy diet is another way to get an ‘out of this world’ smile.“What children eat and when they eat it may affect not only their general health, but also their oral health,” said Dr. Nasha Hunter of Sweetpea Smiles. “Americans are consuming sugary food and drinks more often and in larger portions than ever before. Junk foods and drinks have gradually replaced nutritious beverages and foods for many people. As such, Sweetpea smiles is joining in the festivities to help our patients fight the battle against sugar.”According to the American Dental Association (ADA), the average teenage boy consumes 81 gallons of soft drinks annually, which, when combined with poor snacking habits, contributes to tooth decay. Large amounts of sugar or starch produce food for bacteria on the teeth, which later turns to acid and can eat away at the enamel on a child’s teeth. To reduce the risk of tooth decay in children, a pediatric dentist in Sugar Land, Texas may refer parents to the following guidelines from the ADA:

  • Drink sugary drinks or foods with meals when saliva production is high and can help neutralize acid production.
  • Limit snacking between meals to healthy, low sugar options.
  • Stick to sugarless gum after eating to increase saliva flow and assist in washing out food particles from the mouth
  • Think about what the child is drinking and increase their intake of water
  • Stick to regularly scheduled dental appointments
