Sugar Land Dentist for Kids Place Easter Candy on ‘America’s Most Wanted’ List for Causing Damage to Children’s TeethSUGAR LAND, Texas-- Sweetpea Smiles pediatric dentistry recently named Easter candy to ‘America’s Most Wanted’ list for the adverse effects it has on children’s teeth. While their hope is that parents would be proactive about children’s dental health by selecting non-candy Easter basket fillers, they know this is not reality for most. The Sugar Land pediatric dentist office recently released tips for fighting the post Easter sweet tooth.“If the Easter Bunny recently visited your house and left your kids with tons of sugary treats, the time to be proactive about oral health has passed,” said Dr. Nasha Hunter, Sugar Land pediatric dentist at Sweetpea Smiles. “The good news is, there are tips to prevent further damage when you have indulged your sweet tooth.”According to Dr. Hunter, the best things you can do after indulging in post Easter sweets are:

  1. Drink lots of water. After eating sweets, water helps to neutralize bacteria left behind by sugary treats. Swish out the mouth to remove any remaining pieces that may be stuck between the teeth.
  2. Limit Snacking. Instead of eating small amounts of candy throughout the day, it is actually better for teeth to be exposed to acids for shorter periods of time.
  3. Delay Brushing. After exposing teeth to high amounts of acids, brushing immediately could spread those acids around and weaken the enamel. Drink lots of water and wait for at least 30 minutes before brushing.

Dr. Hunter recommends following these tips for a healthier indulgence, but also says to be aware of the ‘sticky factor’ in the sweets you are consuming. “These are the most dangerous treats due to the fact that they stick in the teeth and allow the bacteria to settle until you are able to brush,” she says, “The longer candy is in your mouth, the more damage it will cause. If you are going to indulge, the best sweets are dark chocolate with at least 75% cacao and those treats that contain nuts, as they can remove some of the stickiness of other candies.”Though Easter has passed, taking care of your child’s smile is a year round job.
