My son is very scared of the dentist, but they accommodated him with coloring books and bubbles, and his favorite show. He started being relaxed, so when he saw the dentist, there was no issue. b

Find Out If Orthodontic Care Is Right For Your Child!

A Lifetime of Beautiful Smiles Ahead!

Why Do Children's Teeth Become Crooked?

With baby teeth making way for permanent ones, it's common to see teeth growing in crooked, crowded, or with gaps. Factors like genetics, early tooth loss, or prolonged habits like thumb-sucking can influence how teeth emerge and align.

Orthodontic Wellness and Your Child

Orthodontic care goes beyond just straight teeth. It plays a pivotal role in your child's overall wellness. Properly aligned teeth contribute to clearer speech, easier chewing, and reduced wear and tear. Moreover, correcting bite issues can prevent jaw problems later in life. A straight smile is also easier to clean, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.

Common orthodontic concerns we address include

  • Underbites, crossbites
  • Crowded or crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Extra or missing teeth
  • Effects of prolonged thumb-sucking on teeth or jaw growth

If your child experiences one or more of the orthodontic concerns listed above, schedule a consultation with our friendly pediatric dental team. We can help you give your child a healthy, happy smile!

Interceptive Orthodontics

Our team of dentists believes that children deserve healthy and attractive smiles they can feel good about. A beautiful smile can give them the confidence they need to make new friends or try out for the school play.
With all the changes going on inside your child’s mouth, it’s not surprising that sometimes teeth may not erupt properly – they may become crowded, or grow in crooked or with wide gaps. We provide preventive, interceptive orthodontic treatments for toddlers and young children, including:
  • Space maintainers
  • Crossbite correction
  • Arch expansion
  • Braces
  • And more
These treatments often minimize or even eliminate the need for more costly orthodontic procedures in the future. Every member of our staff has a gentle manner to ensure your child receives a beautiful, straight smile they will be proud to show off!

Full Orthodontics

While we can certainly address the needs of young children, we offer a full range of orthodontic solutions for children and teens as well. Here are the services we offer to give your child a beautiful and healthy smile:

Braces

We use brackets and wires made from a variety of lightweight materials to guide your child’s teeth into the correct alignment over the course of treatment. Elastic bands can also be applied to generate additional pressure on your child’s teeth and jaws.

Headgear

If we find your child would benefit from headgear, the appliance is attached to the braces from the back of your child’s head. As with rubber bands, headgear is used when extra force is needed to move your child’s teeth and jaws.

Oral Appliances

Our dentists provide a range of oral appliances that encourage jaw growth and correct bite issues.

Retainers

Once your child’s orthodontic treatment is complete, they will receive a comfortable, custom-made retainer. The retainer is worn to hold your child’s teeth in their new position and maintain their treatment results. Without regular retainer use, your child’s teeth may shift out of alignment.

At Sweetpea Smiles, our dedication extends beyond just dental procedures. Aligned with ADA guidelines, our practice boasts cutting-edge cleanliness and safety protocols. Frequently Asked Questions

What is orthodontics for children?

Orthodontics for children involves diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial abnormalities. The goal is to ensure proper tooth alignment, bite function, and facial symmetry as a child grows.

Why might my child need orthodontic treatment?

Children may need orthodontic treatment due to crooked, crowded, or gapped teeth, as well as bite issues like overbites, underbites, or crossbites. Early intervention can address these concerns and set the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

It's recommended to have an initial orthodontic assessment no later than age 7. By this age, children have a mix of primary and permanent teeth, making it an ideal time to spot and address potential alignment issues.

What's the difference between interceptive and full orthodontics?

Interceptive orthodontics, often initiated between ages 6-10, focuses on addressing dental issues early, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for future treatments. Full orthodontics, typically starting from the early teen years, involves comprehensive alignment treatments like braces.

Are braces the only option for my child?

No, braces are just one of several orthodontic treatments available. Depending on the child's needs, treatments may include space maintainers, crossbite correction, arch expansion, oral appliances, retainers, and more.

How long will my child need to wear braces?

The duration varies depending on the individual's needs. On average, most children wear braces for 1-3 years. Consistent follow-up appointments and adhering to care guidelines can influence treatment length.

Will my child need to wear a retainer after braces?

Yes, retainers are crucial after braces to maintain the new tooth position. Without regular retainer use, there's a risk of teeth shifting back to their original positions.

How can I ensure my child's teeth stay healthy during orthodontic treatment?

Maintain regular dental check-ups, encourage diligent brushing and flossing, and avoid hard or sticky foods that can damage orthodontic appliances.

Are there any orthodontic solutions that are less noticeable than traditional braces?

Certainly! There are options like clear braces, ceramic braces, and clear aligners that offer more discreet orthodontic treatment. Consult with your orthodontist to see which is best for your child.

How do I know if my child needs orthodontic treatment?

Signs may include crowded or misplaced teeth, difficulty biting/chewing, thumb-sucking beyond age 5, or jaws that shift or make sounds. However, a consultation with a pediatric orthodontist in Sugar Land, TX is the best way to determine specific needs.
