Children's Complete Checkup
What Is Dental Sedation?
Dental sedation is used to reduce discomfort and put children in a state of relaxation, including special needs patients or especially anxious children. Sweetpea Smiles of Richmond offers laughing gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation to help your little ones feel at ease. We always follow the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry sedation guidelines for a safe and comfortable experience.
What Is Laughing Gas?
Laughing gas is a colorless, sweet-smelling blend of gases. When inhaled together through a small mask placed over the nose, the gases create feelings of calm and relaxation. Some patients describe feeling giggly or silly, which is why it is called “laughing gas.” The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes its usage as a safe, effective technique for treating kids’ dental anxiety.
What Is Oral Sedation?
Oral sedation is a mild-to-moderate method. It’s recommended for a variety of cases, such as:
- To relax very anxious patients
- To help minimize physical discomfort and pain
- For young patients requiring extensive dental treatment
- To control behavior or movement to allow the safe completion of the dental procedure
This sedation option involves using a prescription sedative, which is measured out based on the child’s weight by the pediatric dentists shortly before your visit. Your child’s vital signs will be monitored throughout the procedure. Your child will keep their natural reflexes, and may feel sleepy or fall asleep during the procedure, but they won’t lose consciousness.
What Is IV Sedation?
A board-certified anesthesiologist will provide intravenous (IV) sedation in our office and monitor your child throughout their procedure and during the recovery period after the appointment. IV sedation is sometimes recommended for children who:
- Are very anxious
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Are unable to cooperate during dental treatment
- Are undergoing a long or complex procedure
